REVIEW: Reputation and a darker vision in Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston’s stirring ‘Evita’

She was a mystery, but everyone thought they knew her.  

From a wily and ambitious teenager to rising political figure, Eva (Evita) Perón knew she belonged at the top before she ever knew how to get there.

Eddie Noel Rodriguez and the cast of Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston’s ‘Evita’

Evita, with music, book and lyrics by award-winning collaborators Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is a rock opera set in Argentina from 1934-1952.  Part of what makes Evita such a captivating work is its vibrant pacing and memorable soundtrack.  Based on the life of Maria Eva PerónEvita’s life moves much like the soundtrack’s quick rhythms as it journeys through song from night club to city street to majestic balcony with barely a pause for applause.  Cameron McEachearn’s grand set divulges Eva’s life in its sheer magnitude in its sterling balcony with brick bursting out of its cracked walls.

This version of Evita includes songs not featured in the 1996 film of the same name.  The Art of the Possible, a cryptic number not in the film and featuring a group of officers, is particularly engaging.  Eva, in a powerful performance by Isabella Bria Lopez, is a young woman taking Argentina by storm and sees opportunity in Juan Perón, depicted with regal like mindedness by Ryan Mardesich.

Lopez exudes stealthy charm in a knowing smile when she first appears as a teenager.  However, behind her feigned naiveté, Eva is shrewdly on the move as soon as her feet hit the ground for the catchy and effervescent number, Buenos Aires.  Lopez takes Eva from a vivacious teenager onward and excels at her developing influence and maturity through the years. 

She hits her vivacious stride with Buenos Aires which delves into her instant love for the city and keeps up the brisk pace for this demanding role throughout, though some notes at times can sound a bit strident.  She delivers an impressive version of Evita’s signature number, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, glowing in a pristine glittering gown, one of Ellie De Lucia’s 400 vintage costumes in a multitude of dress patterns from casual to elegant to military garb.  The production’s visceral ensemble ranges from heartwarming to heartbreaking as they collectively portray the elite to peasants to Eva’s fascinating family.

No one succeeds without opposition.  Che, depicted with charisma and sardonic wit by Eddie Noel Rodriguez, resonates as part keen observer and part narrator while representing not only the poor working class, but perhaps the truth in his personable delivery.  In a vest, gray slacks and a scally cap, he occasionally engages the crowd, but his primary focus is on Evita.  Tempering each scenario with satirical flair, Rodriguez captures the essence of Che and makes the role uniquely his own as he travels on a risky path for speaking up.  From his mocking observations in Oh What a Circus as well as And the Money Kept Rolling In, his humorous duet in Good Night and Thank You with Lopez, and the reflective ballad, High Flying Adored, you’ll be glad to be taking this musical journey with Rodriguez.

Boasting rich and charming vocals for Magaldi’s signature song, On This Night of a Thousand Stars, Ricardo “Ricky” Holguin blends sensitivity, melodrama, and humor to bombastic night club singer, Magaldi and was a hit with the audience.  Other notable numbers include a tender rendition of Another Suitcase in another Hall by Rebekah Rae Robles and the stirring harmony of Santa Evita.

Engulfing the audience from the moment of Eva Perón’s death from the very beginning, Reagle Music Theatre’s Evita delivers a darker and more distinctive version of Evita.  Baron Pugh’s alarming red and yellow lighting intensifies the fanaticism, dark humor and the power struggle not only between Eva and Juan tempering Eva’s supercilious ambition to run things behind the scenes, but among the masses and in the hypnotic cries of ‘Perón!’  Previous versions portray Eva and Juan as likeminded, but share a genuine love.  Here they seem more like fellow conspirators and Lopez’s You Must Love Me becomes less of a realization or statement, but a desperate plea.

REVIEW:  A toast to Patti Lupone’s fabulous ‘A Life in Notes’ presented by Celebrity Series of Boston

To say it was an honor to witness Patti Lupone’s brilliance onstage is an understatement.  Having won three Tony Awards and two Grammy Awards, this Julliard-trained American Theater Hall of Famer from Long Island has proven time and again she is a master of her craft and it is easy to see why through her personal musical memoir A Life in Notes.

Conceived and warmly directed by Scott Wittman with inspiring music direction by Joseph Thalken, Celebrity Series of Boston presented Patti Lupone:  A Life in Notes live and in person at Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusetts for one night only on April 2.  The show was 2 hours including one intermission and is touring around the country.  Click here for more information and here for what is up next during Celebrity Series of Boston’s exciting season.

Accompanied by pianist Joseph Thalken and Brad Phillips on strings, Patti Lupone made an endearing emotional entrance having been greeted by a roaring standing ovation from the audience.  Donning a glimmering flirty black suit and sparkling earrings before later stepping into a shimmering showstopper with flowing cape, Lupone launched into a heartfelt and stirring rendition of Leon Russell’s A Song for You.  The opening number was just the first of several touching moments during this production.

Part autobiography and part love letter to her fans, A Life in Notes is a beautiful tapestry of music which includes American Standards and Broadway that have made an indelible impact on this mezzo-soprano’s life and career so far.  Humble and gracious, Lupone is a sharp and avid storyteller sharing her personal experiences while reflecting on valuable life lessons.  She delivered each refreshing number with a mix of charisma, wit, style and creativity as the tale behind the song unfolds sharing her reflections on growing up on Long Island before establishing her decades -long career.  Bathed in luminous purple, orange and gold lights, Lupone took the stage in front of a baby grand piano topped with a large bouquet of elegant roses as Thalken and Phillips provided accompaniment and smooth harmony to Lupone’s exceptional vocals.

As a fan who hoped to hear Sondheim’s Ladies Who Lunch in which she offered with all the incomparable passion and attitude that this song suggests, her selections covered some of her most memorable numbers and a few unexpected gems.  Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s distinctive Don’t Cry for Me Argentina on strings sounded as epic as it did when she originated the role as Eva Peron in Evita.   Lupone cheekily shook to Bagdasarian and Saroyan’s upbeat Come On-A My House and boasted fiery vocals for Jules Stein and Stephen Sondheim’s commanding Some People.  Shelton’s yearning Lilac Wine and catchy Jameson and Feller’s Summertime, Summertime captured her experiences falling in love.

Patti Lupone’s exciting life has had its tumultuous times living during the age of the Atomic Bomb and the turmoil of the 60s as well as building her success in New York City.  She took the time to movingly pay tribute to loved ones as well as those who have passed away.  Lupone’s pliable vocals and amazing range shine for Cole Porter’s Every time we Say Goodbye as well as for a darkly humorous, saucy and surprising rendition of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller’s Ready to Begin Again, which after hearing it for first time, has become of my favorite numbers.  All of Patti Lupone’s personal touches, reflections, and compelling music selections made for a wonderful evening worth celebrating.

REVIEW:  Vocals soar as Academy of the Company Theatre presents Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Phantom of the Opera’

It may seem like a small detail, but The Phantom of the Opera’s iconic chandelier plays a pivotal role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.  It opens the show in its sheer majesty and the Phantom is actually found hiding in the glittering and monstrous powerhouse of a special effect at one point during the Broadway production.  In fact, it is what fascinates the audience at the beginning of the musical in glorious rhythm with the thunderous and foreboding sound of a pipe organ blaring in the distance and what later crashes to makes the cast run in terror.

Directed insightfully by Sally Ashton Forrest with powerful music directed by Melissa Carubia, Academy of the Company Theatre’s Phantom of the Opera gets so many things right from Vickie Gerard-Culligan’s ornate costumes, the pitch perfect casting, its sinister lighting by Dean Palmer Jr., and its smaller scale replications of Phantom’s famous sets by Ryan Barrow, but the production’s chandelier may not quite meet some lofty expectations.

Set in the 1700’s, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera focuses on a mysterious presence that haunts the famous Palais Garnier Opera House in Paris, France.  New opera house co-owners Ben Cavallo-Smith as Monsieur Richard Firmin and Weston Hammond as Monsieur Giles Andre make a distinguished and at times humorous pair in vintage suits with tails as they start to realize things are not what they seem.

Phantom of the Opera boasts some enduring yet challenging music numbers and the cast may feature students up to 18 years of age, but their vocals are well beyond their years.  Jillian Pongonis as Christine and Catrina Riker as Carlotta hit some extraordinary notes for being so young and it was a joy to hear Riker’s Think of Me and Prima Donna as she prances around the stage in signature diva fashion, bold and comical as she shouts her demands.  Carlotta’s sophisticated gowns become more extravagant as the musical progresses and the cast hits its outrageous stylish stride for Masquerade.  Salvator Guillermo Garcia, whose past performances with ACT include Jean Val Jean in Les Miserables, has a supporting and memorable role as Ubaldo Piangi.  Garcia not only does a wonderful job vocally in Hannibal and Notes with the cast, but his occasional tenuous smirks and smiles enhance the musical’s humorous moments.

Pongonis may be slight in stature, but her powerful vocals exceed her years as does Gilbert Dabady as The Phantom.  Dabady and Pongonis’s duet of The Point of No Return may seem a bit mature for their ages, but Angel of Music and  Music of the Night are beautifully performed and Pongonis’s stirring rendition of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again is a must see.  Dabady is mysterious and threatening as the Phantom, his deep and resounding vocals all the more menacing offstage. Dabady and Pongonis are a complex and charismatic pair while Charlie Flaherty is well suited for the daring and charming Raoul.  Amid a pale blue rooftop, Christine and Raoul perform a sweet rendition of All I Ask of You

Clever blocking and reigned in sets aptly accommodate the Company Theatre stage. Tints of haunting purple, vintage marble columns, nostalgic lighting, eerie skulls, an angelic stone statue, onstage gold lined opera box seats, a brass organ, monkey music box, and a candelabra lit lair on a misty lake help recreate iconic scenes and special effects that bring this somewhat opera within an opera to life.  As a big Phantom of the Opera fan, Academy of the Company Theatre’s Phantom of the Opera captures this moving and mystical musical best known for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic soundtrack and makes the magic of the longest running show on Broadway last a little longer in Norwell.

REVIEW:  Go see Academy of the Company Theatre’s heartwarming, moving, and family-friendly ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’

The one thing more magnificent then Joseph’s dream coat is the tale behind it.  An interactive, endearing, and humorous production, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years with its exuberant story and its versatile and brilliant music by the Academy Award-winning team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.  Joseph’s music offers a wide spectrum of music genres for any taste from calypso to rock and roll which accompanies the unique retelling of a sacred tale of treachery and unceasing hope.

Based on the Book of Genesis and set in the land of Canaan and Egypt, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat explores the incredible journey of Joseph and his brothers as Joseph struggles to discover his destiny.  It is very much a collaborative, ensemble piece featuring three engaging narrators portrayed by Gilbert Dabady last seen in ACT’s Les Miserables, Cate Healey, and Elizabeth Nunnery as they share Joseph’s tale not only with the audience, but with the surrounding and energetic young cast gathered onstage.  Dabady, Healey, and Nunnery all have powerful and very different voices that complement each other throughout the performance.

With a sweet smile and unassuming demeanor, Tim Bevens portrays humble, yet forthright dreamer Joseph with instant likability from his first opening number, a warm and melodious rendition of Any Dream Will Do.  Bevens delivers a compelling performance as a naïve outsider, his versatile vocal range effortless for the soothing Any Dream Will Do to stirring Close Every Door, his tone heart rendering and sympathetic.

Wearing a white beard, Jacob Yates takes on the mostly silent role of Jacob, Joseph’s devoted father.  Yates makes the most out of this role with an amusing walk and some physical humor.  Led by Charlie Flaherty’s standout portrayal as Joseph’s smirking and sneaky brother Reuben, One More Angel in Heaven depicts the united camaraderie not only by Joseph’s eleven brothers, but from the cast, all in on a little secret.  Another excellent number that depicts the brothers’ united front is delivered by Ben Cavallo-Smith as Judah and his brothers for Roland Schulz as Benjamin, a catchy, amusing song called Benjamin Calypso.

Combining blue, glitter, and gold into dazzling Egyptian attire, Sal Garcia, who was last seen as Jean Val Jean in ACT’s Les Miserables, makes a grand entrance in suave sunglasses and a bouffant hairstyle as Pharaoh, complete with shimmering gold sneakers.  Garcia shows off his comedic talent and charisma in the show stopping number Song of the King, combining the essence and high energy of a certain king not to be revealed here and Jack Black.  It is fun to watch Garcia in a role where he can let loose.

The transformative lighting by Dean Palmer Jr. ranges from a lone spotlight to doubling for the hot, desert sun to flashing, multicolored spotlights for Go Go Go Joseph to the warm candlelight and modest staging of Close Every Door.  Though most of the sets are colorful and fun, there is something special about the translucent, simple staging for Close every Door by candlelight, letting Tim Bevens’s poignant rendition speak for itself without distractions.

Among the vibrant and bold costumes by John Crampton and Alison Gordon is the famous coat in yellow and green and ochre… Joseph’s magnificent, flowing, and sparkling coat is a head turner decked out in multi-colored stars on the back.  The cast wearing sunglasses, an unusual camel, and cute Egyptian “beetles” among the crowd on a unconventional journey to Egypt are just a few of the subtle, cheerful touches added to this lighthearted production that certainly has its share of stirring and difficult moments, but with far more uplifting and spirited ones, it’s difficult to feel down for long.

Renowned Broadway producer Ken Davenport talks Tony Awards, Hollywood, and ‘Gettin’ the Band Back Together’

Ambitious Tony award-winning Broadway and off-Broadway theatre producer and writer Ken Davenport has had a passion for theatre his entire life.  He has produced renowned musicals from Godspell to Kinky Boots to this year’s Tony-nominated Once on This Island and helms the North American activity for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group.  Dedicated to bridge the gap between the stage and its audience, he is also behind an interactive theatre app, Didhelikeit as well as the hit board game, Be a Broadway Star.

Sleepless Critic:  What awakened your interest in theatre and how did the opportunity to become a Broadway producer come about?

Ken Davenport:  My mom told me I first kicked when she was watching a production of Godspell, so I think I’ve always wanted to be part of the theatre.  I produced the first revival of Godspell on Broadway in 2011.

Being a producer is like starting your own business.  Opportunities don’t come about.  You have to make them happen.

SC:  What do you like most about producing and what production did you find to be the most challenging?

KD:  I love watching the audience’s expressions on their faces at the end of the show whether they are laughing, crying, or cheering.  We’ve affected them and that’s a joy to watch.

The most challenging part of producing is getting everyone on the same page.  It’s like getting ten people to paint the Mona Lisa.

SC:  Is there a show you turned down that you ended up wishing you were a part of?

KD:  Nah, I have no regrets.  I’ve passed on shows that have gone on to be hits, but they weren’t me.  They still wouldn’t be me, even if I had a few more bucks in my pocket.  I’d much rather stay true to what I want to do.

SC:  The musical, Mean Girls is one of the big Tony nominees this year and it is one of many Hollywood to Broadway musical crossovers.  From Pretty Woman to Heathers, do you think that this method has been an effective way to draw a wider audience to Broadway?  From what I’ve seen of Mean Girls and having recently seen Waitress, it seems to be working well.

KD:  Movies have become a common source for adaptations in the last ten years, but it doesn’t guarantee success.  I think the adaptations that work best are the ones that don’t have super popular source material.  It’s like when a movie is made from a book.  Most people think the book is better.  That happens a lot when popular movies are made into musicals.  It’s a very high hurdle to jump over.

SC:  What has been your favorite Hollywood to Broadway crossover musical so far?

KD:  Kinky Boots because I am one of the producers.

SC:  From classic musicals like Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel to Spongebob Squarepants, what nominations most surprised you and which did you think should have been nominated?

KD:  I think my choreographer from Once on this Island, Camille A. Brown should have been nominated as well as Alex Newell.

SC:  Which do you predict will be the standout production to win?  I’m sure you were thrilled when Once on This Island was nominated, a show you have produced.

KD:  I think the awards this year will be spread out amongst several shows rather than one big winner taking home multiple awards.

SC:  You work to make Broadway a more interactive experience.  Please tell me about the apps you promote.

KD:  We have an app for our website, Didhelikeit.com that gives you a snapshot of show reviews and focuses on the New York Times.

Gettin the Band Back Together

‘Gettin’ the Band Back Together’ premieres on July 19.

SC:  Just a few of the productions you have worked on is Groundhog DaySpring Awakening, and The Play That Goes Wrong.  The musical comedy, Getting the Band Back Together is coming up.

KD:  I’m super excited about Gettin’ the Band Back Together, which starts performances on July 19.  It’s such a fun show to be a part of and totally original.  It has an original story, music, etc.  It’s going to be a blast so come see it!

Bursting with vibrant, dynamic costumes by Goodspeed Musicals, wardrobe supervisor Amelia Fitch not only rose to the occasion, but makes a distinct, daring, and memorable impression in each spectacular ensemble and most notably in Joseph’s magnificent coat. From stunning, glimmering headdresses to brightly colored, heavily-embroidered designs that recalled another era, the costumes were consistently remarkable.  The scenic design by Peter Colao and Richard Shreiber and David Wilson’s lighting design further enhance the show’s visually spectacular nature in multi-colored lights and innovative sets.  The versatile and brilliant music, by the Academy Award-winning team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, offers a wide spectrum of music for every taste from calypso to rock and roll, accompanying the unique retelling of a sacred tale of treachery and unceasing hope.

With wide eyes and an unassuming demeanor, Peter Mill portrays humble, yet forthright Joseph with instant likability.  Peter gives a multi-dimensional, powerful performance as a naïve outsider who is transformed by his destiny.  Peter’s versatile, soothing, vocals master signature numbers Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door, his tone heart rendering and sympathetic.

Waltham native, singer, and American Idol contestant Ayla Brown returned and delivers a powerful performance as Narrator, ten years after she last performed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Reagle.  Clever, sunny, and engaging, silvery soprano Ayla Brown has a relaxed charm with each cast member, but was particularly sweet with the Children’s Choir, a small group of boys and girls.  Carefully arranged as a coordinated rainbow in pinks, greens, purples, blues, yellows, reds, the choir’s angelic, soaring voices blend in perfectly at different points in the songs.  Their choreography, helmed by Susan Chebookjian, mix well with Ayla during the number, Go, Go, Go, Joseph, as the kids performed the hand jive.  It is also worth mentioning that one of the child singers at intermission was dressed like a mini-Joseph, wearing a lit multicolored hat and a cleverly designed mini Technicolor Dreamcoat made entirely of beach towels.

Charming and funny even whether they are rejoicing or scheming, the united choreography between Joseph’s eleven brothers reflects the wonderful camaraderie between each of them.   This was most evident during a country themed tune, One More Angel in Heaven with Bernice Baldassaro, who does a wonderful job chewing the scenery as Judah.  Another excellent number that depicts the brothers’ united front was delivered by Taavon Gamble as Naphtali, a catchy, amusing song called Benjamin Calypso.

Rock n roll royalty takes on a new meaning in the show’s rollicking, show stopping number, Song of the King, featuring Andrew Giordano’s  always impressive comedic talent and zany charisma as Pharoah.  It’s a shimmering display in blue and gold as Andrew flawlessly captures the essence of a certain king in a high energy number not to be revealed here.   It is one of the great highlights of the show in every joyous, silly moment.

The cast wearing sunglasses and a unconventional journey to Egypt are just a few of the subtle, modern touches added to this lighthearted production that had its share of stirring moments, but offers so many more uplifting, spirited moments, it’s difficult to feel down for long.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary, Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston proudly presents the award-winning, grand scale musical, Showboat starring Broadway’s Ciaran Sheehan for two weekends from Thursday, July 6 through Sunday, July 16.  With music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Showboat explores the relationships and events aboard a Mississippi show boat from 1887 to 1927.  An insightful musical delves into significant issues such as prejudice and forbidden love, Showboat features the timeless numbers Ol’ Man River, Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man and Make Believe.

Waitress is saving the best for last.  Currently on Broadway starring Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles who also wrote Waitress’s music and lyrics, Waitress is a romantic comedy musical about a waitress gifted at baking pies.  She is unhappy in her small town existence until a surprise helps her to put her life into perspective.  Waitress serves up its own delights from February 20 through March 4.
