REVIEW:  Manual Cinema cleverly performed vibrant and layered children’s production ‘Leonardo!  A Wonderful Show about a Terrible Monster’ at Wheelock Family Theatre

Recently, Wheelock Family Theatre and Manual Cinema presented a vibrant tale about terrible monsters and the true meaning of kindness.

It was easy to sense the buzz from the audience and the building excitement from the children as everyone settled into one of Leonardo!’s final performances.  Accompanied by multi-talented guitarist, narrator, character voices and vocalist Lily Emerson, Leonardo! Focuses on a monster named Leonardo, portrayed with bold yet self-effacing charm by Kevin Michael Wesson, who seems incapable of scaring anyone, so Leonardo sets out to become the monster everyone thinks he should be.

Leonardo! Is an engaging and sweet production, but what truly sets it apart is the amazing and transparent nature in which this show is put together.  Taking place inside an onstage studio, witnessing everything being created live piece-by-piece with lighting, live action, illustrated projections and video makes it a remarkable behind-the-scenes learning experience.  It was also refreshing to see innovative puppetry leaning away from CGI and strictly computerized methods and more towards book-influenced illustration.

Mieka Van der Ploeg’s textured costumes and chunky wigs are illustrations come to life as the audience has the option to focus on the projections of the finished product and/or the behind the scenes aspect of the production.   

Fueled by a blend of light pop, inquisitive, echoing and effervescent music by Ben Kauffman and Kyle Vegter and spirited lighting by Trey Brazeal and Nick Chamernik, Lily Emerson is a marvel delivering this clever tale in all its swift transitions and voices alongside Karly Gesine Bergmann as pensive Sam, Sharaina Latrice Turnage as unexpected Kerry, and Wesson as Leonardo.  It was also easy to see the enthusiasm from everyone involved.

Leonardo!  A Wonderful Show about a Terrible Monster was authentic, amusing, boisterous and brief enough to keep the young audience captivated while teaching them about life and making friends.  I particularly appreciated a section of the story about the library and its various ‘suses’ and the expression, ‘Scare the tuna salad out of him.’

At just 50 minutes, both tales link seamlessly together building on themes such as bullying, social anxiety, sibling rivalry and appreciating one another’s differences.  Leonardo! boasts a fascinating and layered universal message valuable to anyone from toddler to elder.

REVIEW:  Sullivan Rep capped off their premiere season with a heartwarming ‘Annie’

The power of tomorrow.               

Generations have grown up with some version of little orphan Annie and her trusty dog Sandy who meets billionaire tycoon Oliver Warbucks during Depression-era New York in 1933.  It is a classic family tale for all ages with the eternal promise that no matter what happens, there is always hope.  As the intimate, sweet-sounding orchestra chimed its first triumphant, horn-infused notes of the overture from the stage highlighting song snippets of It’s a Hard Knock LifeFully Dressed, and TomorrowSullivan Rep proves this steadfast musical favorite never goes out of style.

To cap off their first season of New Beginnings and Opportunities, Sullivan Rep brought back this beloved musical classic to a sold out audience for most of its run.  Directed warmly by Dan SullivanAnnie continued its successful run through Sunday, December 21 live and in person at The Windsor Club of Waban in Newton, Massachusetts.  The music was two and a half hours including an intermission.  Click here for more information.

Part of what makes Annie such fun to produce is although the tale remains the same, there is always room to perform it a little differently each time.  Having seen the beloved 1982 film adaptation featuring a brilliant cast including Tim CurryCarol BurnettBernadette PetersAileen Quinn, and the late great Albert Finney, it is easy to forget the stage version sticks to the storyline for the most part, but also contains additional songs.  Sullivan Rep also added some welcome candid quips to the show such as ‘Some were from the Bronx, Miss,’ and ‘Just think…New Jersey’ for added humor as well as a touching moment when all the orphans harmonize for the final phrase in the number Maybe for added resonance.

Rather than utilizing the Windsor Club stage itself, Dan Sullivan made the most of the space for Annie by performing it at eye level in the auditorium to create an immersive experience featuring a pared down set the cast set up and took down with each scene.   From a startling lightning storm to a red glowing stove to colorful and festive cheer, lighting director Erik Fox kept the show’s optimistic spirit in check throughout the production.

Wearing thick scarves, layers and period hats, a group of homeless New Yorkers delivered a spirited version of Hooverville which dials into social injustices during the Great Depression and the not so unfamiliar financial tension of today.  In a pinstriped suit and silk tie, Todd Yard boasted soaring vocals as workaholic and tough-minded New York City billionaire tycoon Oliver Warbucks as he paid tribute to his beloved city with N.Y.C.  before later performing a stirring rendition of Something was Missing which is just a couple of the additional songs included in the stage version of the musical, but not in the film.  N.Y.C. had a skip in its step featuring piles of presents, special appearances by Mr. Peanut and Santa Claus and a wowed city newcomer who delivered stunning vocals in her brief appearance during the song.

In a fur lined coat and lilac heels, Temma Boudreau charmingly depicts elegant Grace Farrell, Oliver Warbucks’s levelheaded secretary and shares a few sweet moments of her own with Kuong.  Boudreau’s breezy yet professional demeanor fit in well with Yard’s no nonsense moxie.   

Donning a straight red haircut, Charlotte Kuong depicted a bit more restrained version of Annie still infused with cleverness, earnestness and charm.  Her strong and clear vocals were most prominent during the numbers Maybe with adorable Leah Hudson as Molly as well as the show’s signature song, Tomorrow.   She also shared some endearing moments with Yard as Oliver Warbucks and charming him into seeing New York City with her was a particular highlight.

The orphans’ version of Fully Dressed is adorable and sure to make you smile. Sound designer Andrew Mulholland successfully rewound the clock featuring vintage radio programs and an always entertaining look at how radio created sound effects in the 30s.

In curlers and a whistle that she makes the most of during the show, Carly Evans depicts a sarcastic and matter of fact Miss Hannigan.  While some actresses sink their teeth into what can be considered an over the top role, Evans instead downplayed Miss Hannigan as exasperated, dark and moody showing off her strident vocals for Little Girls as the orphans demonstrated their knack for pushing her buttons. Cristhian Mancinas-Garcia as Hannigan’s conman brother Rooster and Melissa Paz as bleached blond Lily St. Regis make an amusing, sleazy pair and with Evans, a trio of conspiratorial adversaries.  Paz is a powerful singer and looked like she enjoyed portraying a woman who can’t sing.  Some of the rollicking chorography of Easy Street offered some subtle nods to the film version.

From select city shoppers to matching uniformed house staff to government officials, this enthusiastic ensemble cast enhanced the joy in this classic tale highlighted by Brian Higgins as a jovial and charismatic FDR, Robert Orzalli as Drake with a twinkle in his eye, Anthony Rinaldi stood out as jocular radio announcer Bert Healey, and the gum chewing, New Yorker Boylan Sisters were a treat.

REVIEW: Optimism knows no bounds in radiant and enchanting family classic, ‘Annie’

No one delivers plunky optimism quite like Annie. 

Even in the worst of circumstances, Annie can always find a silver lining which can be demonstrated in a moment when a homeless person complains of empty pockets to which Annie responds, ‘At least you got pockets.’

Set designer Wilson Chin has beautifully captured a classic and overcast New York landscape with rolling fog over the towering Brooklyn Bridge that illustrates Annie’s signature phrase that the sun will come out tomorrow.  Blending costume designer Alejo Vietti’s gradually bursting hues in 30s-era fashion, Phillip Rosenberg’s rich and colorful lighting, and Chin’s transformative and exceptional rolling set design, Annie is absolutely right.

Donning straight red hair, burgundy cardigan, and black boots, Rainier “Rainey” Treviño delivers spunky charm as Annie, her stirring vocals navigate through various renditions of Maybe, each version implying new meaning and later a soaring rendition of her signature song, Tomorrow that is sure to bring a lot of smiles.  Treviño shares some endearing chemistry with Daddy Warbucks and Julia Nicole Hunter as Grace.  Annie’s trusty dog Sandy is a ringer for the dog in other adaptations and the pair establish themselves as immediate kindred spirits.

Stefanie Londino relishes in the fiery role of sarcastic and snarky Miss Hannigan making a wobbly yet grand entrance as only Miss Hannigan can.  In a multi-patterned dress with curly brown hair and a thick Brooklyn accent, Londino makes the role her own while certain inflections wonderfully resemble Carol Burnett’s delivery.

Londino’s sharp, comedic timing and a powerful belt never shines brighter than during the hilarious number, Little Girls as the orphans mischievously make their presence known in various surprise antics.  The orphans skillfully navigate the memorable number It’s a Hard Knock Life as buckets slide and brooms glide in a rhythmic chorus.  With Jade Smith’s standout performance as adorable Molly, the orphans are strong, talented, and enchanting.

In a wide brimmed hat, Jeffrey T. Kelly conveys sleazy charisma as ‘Rooster’ and Samantha Stevens articulates shrill and seeming airhead with panache.  They make quite a pair especially joined by Londino in a rollicking rendition of Easy Street.

With soaring and silvery vocals and a sophisticated dual toned blue suit, Julia Nicole Hunter elegantly depicts Grace Farrell, Oliver Warbucks’s levelheaded secretary.  Hunter participates in a frequent battle of wills with Stefanie Londino as Miss Hannigan and their smug verbal exchanges are a riot.

REVIEW: Soprano-actress Christina Pecce puts her own spin on a few famous faces in fabulous ‘Witches, Bitches, and Divas!’

In a white suit and glittering heels, soprano and actress Christina Pecce may have paid homage to Beyonce (her style reminiscent of Beyonce’s suit at the Superbowl 50 halftime show), but certainly stepped into quite a few famous shoes with ‘Witches, Bitches, and Divas,’ a one night only, one woman cabaret that took place at the American Repertory Theatre’s (A.R.T.) Oberon Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Sunday, September 8.  Click here for a closer look at ‘Witches, Bitches, and Divas!’ and here to see where Christina will perform next.

Don’t be deceived by the title.  No witches, bitches, or divas actually appear in the show unless you are referring to “every woman” Christina Pecce.  Her one woman show steps into all three categories to create a partly auto-biographical and comedic musical show covering the likes of Elphaba (Witch) from the Tony award-winning hit musical ‘Wicked,’ Miss Hannigan from the classic musical, ‘Annie‘ (Bitch, if left to interpretation), and diva Mariah Carey.  She also chooses zany selections about marriage and shows off her classically-trained vocal talents performing a soaring French opera and then a tonally-deaf singer with Flanders and Swann’s A Word to My Ear.  The bottom line is Christina Pecce can sing just about anything.

Accompanied by a trio of powerhouse musicians which included Music Director Steve Bass on piano, drummer George Darrah, and bassist Nick Francese, Christina brings humor and personal anecdotes while adding her own spin to various medleys.  She tackles subjects like nannies, drinking, and gravity and even sneaks in an amusing little drinking game too.

From Sondheim to Nat King Cole, Christina makes her time onstage an unpredictable, interactive treat as she occasionally wanders through the crowd, serenading a few audience members.  She also left a piece of her heart onstage in a stirring rendition of Sondheim’s ‘Being Alive.’  Pecce last appeared at the Oberon in February and from the glowing reception she received when she returned, it certainly will not be her last time.

Enhanced by a few impressive stunts, the orphans skillfully navigate the memorable number, It’s a Hard Knock Life as the orphans mourn their life in the orphanage with Miss Hannigan.  The orphans’ version of Fully Dressed is adorable and sure to make you smile.

Donning a red bob haircut tied with a scarf, Abby Tondorf delivers spunky charm as Annie, her silvery vocals strongest during the numbers I Think I’m Gonna Like it Here and her signature song, Tomorrow.   She shares some endearing moments with Rob Buckel-Gillis as Daddy Warbucks.  Along with her trusty dog Sandy who is a ringer for the dog in other adaptations, the two of them make a sweet pair.

Having made her last appearance as the Dragon in HCMT’s Shrek, Debby Rawson Stratton sinks her teeth into this fiery role as sarcastic and snarky Miss Hannigan.  Wearing a purple silk robe over a green nightgown with frazzled red hair, Debby makes the role her own with sharp, comic timing and a vocal belting quality never better than during the hilarious number, Little Girls.  Aaron Stolicker as Rooster and Whitney Lloyd as Lily St. Regis make an amusing, sleazy pair.

Kristen H. Tremblay talks role in Hingham Civic Music Theatre’s ‘Cabaret’ to kick off 70th anniversary season

Hingham Civic Music Theatre (HCMT) is thrilled to kick off their 70th anniversary.  Over the past 7 decades, The Wizard of Oz, Rogers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma, Young Frankenstein, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Sound of Music are just a few of the wide range of musical productions HCMT has produced on the South Shore of Massachusetts.  They are launching their milestone season with award-winning spring musical, Cabaret, a captivating musical which celebrated its 50th anniversary just a couple of years ago.

Set in the Kit Kat Club in Berlin, Germany as the Nazi Party was rising to power, Cabaret focuses on nightclub girl Sally who becomes embroiled in a love triangle.  Winner of multiple Tony awards, Cabaret is known for its glamorous dance numbers while dealing with serious issues of the era.  The 1972 film was directed by dance legend Bob Fosse and starred Liza Minnelli in her star making role.  This show is not intended for children and contains mature themes.

Sleepless Critic:  How does it feel to star in the first show of Hingham Civic Music Theatre’s 70th season?  It is quite a milestone.

Kristen H. Tremblay:  I’m so thrilled to be playing a leading role in such a great show as part of this wonderful theater group’s 70th anniversary season! A very special honor for sure!

SC:  What do you like most about being part of Hingham Civic Music Theatre?

KHT:  This is my first production with Hingham Civic Music Theatre. They have such a wonderful reputation and it’s been great getting to know everyone in the group.

SC:  This season also includes the beloved musical, Annie this fall.  You star as Sally Bowles in Cabaret.  Have you ever done this show before?  What was the audition process like for you?

KHT:  I’m a classical soprano and usually play roles very different from Sally. As I get older, I’m trying to challenge myself by going out for roles that might be a stretch for me creatively. Sally Bowles is a complicated, meaty character and love every moment in her shoes.

I auditioned to challenge myself and because I have known the director, Nathan Fogg, for years and think he does great work. I didn’t think I had a shot at getting Sally, but felt really positive about my audition. The day after the audition, I was in line at the grocery store when I got the call. I was shocked and incredibly thrilled.

SC:  The multiple Tony award-winning musical, Cabaret celebrated its 50th anniversary a couple of years ago.  It is a unique musical with memorable songs such as Maybe This Time, Wilkommen, and its famous title track, Cabaret.  What was most challenging about this role?

KHT:  Sally is an iconic character in musical theater. There’s some intimidation associated with the pressure of doing her justice!  She has many sides to her and many intriguing levels. It’s been fun exploring how best to portray her.

SC:  How has it been putting the show together?

KHT:  I adore everyone in this cast. They are such a fantastic group of kind, talented, and hard working people. We are having a blast and we all have deeply bonded. No question I’ve made lasting friendships.

SC:  What is the best reason one should see Hingham Civic Music Theatre’s Cabaret?

KHT:  Cabaret is a very different theatrical experience unlike anything else out there right now. It will not disappoint!  It’s edgy, honest, shocking, funny, and thought provoking.
