REVIEW: Lexus Broadway in Boston presents sizzling and spectacular ‘Moulin Rouge the Musical’

Moulin Rouge is sizzling, romantic and grand scale entertainment perfect just before Valentine’s Day.

Boasting Derek McLane’s lavish and sophisticated heart-shaped sets fueled by Justin Townsend’s vivid lighting so vibrant that could be its own character and Catherine Zuber’s edgy, timely and shimmering costumes, Moulin Rouge the Musical is a glorious spectacle right from the start blending its unique delivery of a multi-generational jukebox musical soundtrack as well as lively and athletic choreography that makes an immediate impact.

 Nothing less could be expected from director Baz Luhrmann, who is not only behind the 1997 frenetic film of the same name in which the musical is based on starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, but has a creative hand in the musical’s signature style.  Filled with popular songs of its time, Moulin Rouge has always been a lavish and wild celebration of desire, the rigid social class divide and first love, but somehow Moulin Rouge the Musical harnesses these rich themes on a considerably larger scale and it is nothing short of a feast for the eyes.

Not only does Moulin Rouge The Musical contain a wide range of sharp and slinky choreography by Sonya Tayah, but features distinct characters with powerful vocals that make lasting impressions. Robert Petkoff brings enthusiasm, poetic and flamboyant charisma to Moulin Rouge’s nightclub master of ceremonies Harold Zidler starting with an incredible first appearance in Welcome to the Moulin Rouge further embellished by a fierce foursome who sang Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim, and Mya’s Lady Marmalade first made famous combined with an even catchier and colorful Can Can Can.

Sarah Bowden as Nini is a sensational dancer and alongside Danny Burgos as Santiago sure know how to turn up the heat.  Burgos and Bowden make a sultry and flirtatious pair especially in the catchy and cathartic Backstage Romance with the cast featuring music from Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and the Eurthymics.

In a top hat and thick mustache, Andrew Brewer is cunning as distinguished and wealthy businessman The Duke of Monroth.  He seems good to be true and has an agenda all his own.  Nick Rashad Borroughs as Toulouse-Lautrec performs a wonderful and moving rendition of Nature Boy and shares warm and humorous camaraderie with Christian Douglas as Christian and Danny Burgos as they advise Christian about life at the Moulin Rouge.

Christian Douglas is captivating as naïve, charming, and idealistic Christian.  Christian is a promising American artist and songwriter longing for his big break.  At the Moulin Rouge in Paris, he sets eyes on Moulin Rouge’s confident, complex, and ambitious main attraction Satine, portrayed splendidly by Gabrielle McClinton.  McClinton, decked out in a black and diamond ensemble, proves herself a versatile showstopper in The Sparkling Diamond singing snippets from Beyonce, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe and Rihanna with over the top dramatic flair, sensuality, and commanding vocals.  Douglas and McClinton bring gorgeous harmony together for Elephant Love Medley featuring Come What May and Silly Love Songs.  Christian also performs a haunting and fiery rendition of El Tango de Roxanne.

REVIEW: Tension mounts for an endearing couple in Lyric Stage’s meaningful production, ‘The Light’

One night can change everything.

Genesis and Rashad think they know each other well.  This lovable couple jokes, knows each other’s likes, quirks, habits, and dreams, and yet in one night, they start to see each other in a new and unfamiliar way.

Surrounded by Baron E. Pugh’s inviting apartment setting which includes a purple couch, teal chairs, and colorful accents by Lauren Corcuera while sketches of Beyoncé, Maya Angelou, Michelle Obama and Ruth Bader Ginsberg hang overhead, Genesis and Rashad know this isn’t just any night.  It’s their anniversary.

Elmer Martinez’s expressive lighting enhances the evocative nature of this production.  It is a meaningful show hinging on the strengths of its leads and Yewande Odetoyinbo as school principal Genesis and Dominic Carter as firefighter Rashad are more than up to the task.  While both characters are stubborn, Odetoyinbo’s grounded and witty nature as Genesis strikes an important balance with Carter’s optimistic and playful sense of humor as Rashad.  Carter is charismatically charming and leads in some of the production’s funniest moments while Odetoyinbo as Genesis is best as the tension builds.  It is a joy to watch as they zing each other, tease, dream about the future, debate, and share some of their most treasured memories together.  Their innate and compelling chemistry attract such a fondness for this couple that it is easy to get lost in what seems like their complete compatibility.

However, realizations and revelations run deep on this special night. Webb’s clever script invites the audience into this couple’s intimate relationship in all its charms with some passing notes of underlying resentment while carefully laying its cards on the table and raising the stakes through every twist and turn.  Odetoyinbo and Carter are a true force as they approach the humor, tension and the difficult and serious topics with compassion.

The Light makes the most out of its 70 minute run time.  It has good pacing and escalates quickly, fueled by Odetoyinbo and Carter’s natural chemistry as the show veers toward its powerful conclusion.

REVIEW: Soprano-actress Christina Pecce puts her own spin on a few famous faces in fabulous ‘Witches, Bitches, and Divas!’

In a white suit and glittering heels, soprano and actress Christina Pecce may have paid homage to Beyonce (her style reminiscent of Beyonce’s suit at the Superbowl 50 halftime show), but certainly stepped into quite a few famous shoes with ‘Witches, Bitches, and Divas,’ a one night only, one woman cabaret that took place at the American Repertory Theatre’s (A.R.T.) Oberon Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Sunday, September 8.  Click here for a closer look at ‘Witches, Bitches, and Divas!’ and here to see where Christina will perform next.

Don’t be deceived by the title.  No witches, bitches, or divas actually appear in the show unless you are referring to “every woman” Christina Pecce.  Her one woman show steps into all three categories to create a partly auto-biographical and comedic musical show covering the likes of Elphaba (Witch) from the Tony award-winning hit musical ‘Wicked,’ Miss Hannigan from the classic musical, ‘Annie‘ (Bitch, if left to interpretation), and diva Mariah Carey.  She also chooses zany selections about marriage and shows off her classically-trained vocal talents performing a soaring French opera and then a tonally-deaf singer with Flanders and Swann’s A Word to My Ear.  The bottom line is Christina Pecce can sing just about anything.

Accompanied by a trio of powerhouse musicians which included Music Director Steve Bass on piano, drummer George Darrah, and bassist Nick Francese, Christina brings humor and personal anecdotes while adding her own spin to various medleys.  She tackles subjects like nannies, drinking, and gravity and even sneaks in an amusing little drinking game too.

From Sondheim to Nat King Cole, Christina makes her time onstage an unpredictable, interactive treat as she occasionally wanders through the crowd, serenading a few audience members.  She also left a piece of her heart onstage in a stirring rendition of Sondheim’s ‘Being Alive.’  Pecce last appeared at the Oberon in February and from the glowing reception she received when she returned, it certainly will not be her last time.
