REVIEW:  From loneliness to lovestruck:  Oscar Animated Short films Nina Gantz’s ‘Wander to Wonder’, Loïc Espuche’s ‘Yuck (Beurk)’, Nicolas Keppens’s ‘Beautiful Men,’ ‘In the Shadow of the Cypress’ and Daisuke Nishio’s ‘Magic Candies’

From loneliness to love struck, this year’s Oscar nominated Animated shorts mixed lighthearted comedy and tragedy covering a wide range of issues including the effects of trauma, bullying, and PTSD.

Nina Gantz’s dutch and international stop motion animated short Wander to Wonder is a poignant and strange reflection of days past.  It runs 14 minutes.

Though the short is about a children’s show, it is not for young children and features some disturbing content.

Flies swarm as a group of tiny performers are trapped inside an old studio and fighting for survival where 80s Belgium children program Wander to Wonder was filmed after its originator Uncle Gilly, depicted by Neil Savage, passes away.  Wander to Wonder has a sorrowful and dank feel to reflect how much time has passed since the gleam of this beautiful and eccentric, if not widely watched children’s show was on the air.  Delivering moments of wacky humor, Toby Jones as Fumbleton, Amanda Lawrence as Mary and Terrance Dunn as Billybud express an inherent yearning as they reflect upon the fond memories of the program and make an awkward attempt to recreate some of them while trying to survive which can be bereft, odd and gruesome.  I felt for their sad situation, but didn’t find myself invested enough in the characters as they struggle to adapt.

Written and directed by Loïc Espuche featuring bright and inviting two dimension animation, French short film Yuck! (Beurk)  is a 13 minute long sweet tale about discovering first love.

A group of children revel in spying on others at summer camp and are disgusted as they watch couples kiss.  However, Leo discovers he has a crush on his friend Lucie.  Yuck explores the discovery, joy, confusion and heartache of life through the eyes of a child.  It is a brief and endearing tale that is worth every minute.

What if you can learn the truth about life around you?

Daisuke Nishio’s ‘Magic Candies’

Written by Baek Heena and directed by Daisuke Nishio, Magic Candies is an insightful 21 minute Japanese CGI animated short about a lonely boy named Dong Dong who purchases a pack of mysterious candies and runs 21 minutes.  However, these colorful candies have a compelling and unexpected power that takes Dong-Dong by complete surprise. 

With the exception of the distinctive characters, the settings are incredibly realistic.  From Dong-Dong’s textured jeans to each detailed strand in the dog’s fur to the layered patterns in Dong-Dong’s wrapped blanket to sweeping fall foliage, Magic Candies unfolds is an aesthetically pleasing manner and is a must see film that is funny, moving, silly, clever and heartwarming.

‘In the Shadow of the Cypress’

Directed by Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi, Iranian short film In the Shadow of the Cypress, winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Short, delves into the strained relationship between a father who suffers from PTSD as the result of war and his daughter which is nearing a breaking point.

Both live together in an isolated seaside house.  The two dimensional 20 minute animated film boasts finely delicate details that enhance the rippling waves, the slender and stylized design of each of the characters right down to the father’s long striped beard.  Its remarkable sound design embellishes a storm of seagulls, an alarming ship ablaze, and the subtle triggers that set the father off as he struggles with his harrowing conflict within.  It can be slow at times, but it is worth watching for its captivating conclusion.

Nicolas Keppens’s ‘Beautiful Men

Balding brothers Steven, Bart, and Koen travel to Istabul to have hair transplants.  However, it is quickly discovered that only one appointment is available.  It traces each character’s nature, insecurities, and how they handle the situation as this error becomes known.

Nicolas Keppens’s Beautiful Men is a two dimension 19 minute international comedy drama short which combines cut out stop motion and white board animation and contains some adult content and nudity.  It is at times a candid short that explores just how far one would go for self improvement.

REVIEW:  From smooth to spirited, Malpaso Dance Company, presented by Celebrity Series of Boston, lights up a rhythmic nation

Malpaso Dance Company brings vibrancy to a crescendo saving the best for last.

Artistically directed by Osnel Delgado and co-founded by Delgado and Fernando Sáez, Malpaso Dance Company delivers a multi-faceted performance in three distinct pieces infusing jazz and a variety of international rhythms to create an upbeat, smooth, comical, and lively look at the many international cultures infused into Cuban dance.

Simply staged and fueled by Manuel Da Silva’s moody haze and filtered spotlight, the production kicks off to a smooth start with Ephrat Asherie’s dynamic choreography featuring dance trio Esteban Aguilar, Osnel Delgado, and Esven González in street clothes and sneakers as they interconnect nimbly to Aldo López Gavilán ‘s piano-infused and ballet-inspired jazz rhythms. Floor..y Ando is a fresh, brief and low key piece offering a building transition with the pieces that follow which gradually transcends into rollicking, drumming, and pulsing rhythms.

Exploring a wide spectrum of cultures, Why You Follow is a long form dance by Ronald K. Brown that delves into upbeat, rolling and mellifluous rhythms from subtle to joyous.  Clifton Taylor’s warm and multi-colored lighting featuring red embellished tones boasts an inviting quality with each step.   Featuring a black backdrop and street clothes embossed by a red flourish, the full company joins together for a combination of freestyle, in sync, and competing moves clapping, sliding, leaping and spinning in bare feet to an array of memorable and catchy rhythms that span from music artists Zap Mama to The Heavy Quarterz.  Breaking off into different groups, these infectious and groovy rhythms make a statement while bringing a brighter spring into each well crafted step by Esteban Aguilar, Daileidys Carrazana, Osnel Delgado, Dayron Dominguez, Esven González, Liz Marian Lorenzo, Laura Rodríguez, Iliana Solis, Jennifer Suárez Ramos, Carlos Valladares, and Greta Yero.

Each individual piece builds in mood and intensity and A Dancing Island serves as a grand finale with a bolder, playful, energetic and theatrical performance steeped in horn-infused rhythms and island sounds.  Featuring a variety of warm, flirtatious and subtle comedic moments, A Dancing Island rides a string of lighthearted emotion demonstrated in trembling knees as well as fluttering, winding, and galloping dance moves.  Featuring the full cast, this grand finale mixes the traditional with the contemporary in a string of sporadic humor, tender moments, Osnel Delgado’s tight choreography and playful intonations.  Manuel Da Silva’s animated lighting design sparks to the rhythm while transforming into luminous blues, pinks, and reds.  Featuring high socks, suspenders, and flowing skirts included in Guido Gali’s vibrant costume design, A Dancing Island delivers breezy charm in traditional Cuban dances to piano and horn-infused rhythms which includes spoken word and silent dance.

From subtle to catchy to exuberant, Malpaso Dance Company can have moments of repetition, but more often delivers uplifting charm and athletic precision  to vivid and compelling cultural rhythms.

Insects can be elegant and extraordinary…and it all starts with an egg.

Going behind the scenes at Cirque du Soleil: OVO, some intriguing facts were unveiled about how this tremendous production comes together.  From the preparation to the performers which includes two Olympians to Liz Vandal’s kaleidoscopic costumes from Montreal, this unique production is brought to life in distinctive venues all over the world.  The following are some amazing facts from Senior Publicist Janie Mallet of OVO:

  • Cirque du Soleil is celebrating its 40th anniversary!  OVO’s cast and crew is a multi-cultural group that has been traveling around the world since 2009.  A quick paced touring production, OVO has spent fifteen years on the road changing city or country every single week.  The show did break during the pandemic before returning in 2022 with a revamped production featuring new acts and new music.
  • ‘Ovo’ is Portuguese for ‘egg’.  The production starts when The Foreigner arrives at this new colony of insects with an egg on his back.  The show explores how we interact with one another and learn to accept and celebrate our differences.  There is a love story, curiosities, and a bit of a confrontation in a world likened to a Brazilian rainforest.
  • Not only does the production travel with a full gym backstage, but with a full time coach, access to nutritionists, two performance therapists, doctors and an artistic team of 100 people with 52 performing onstage.
  • The artists and athletes do their own cardio, strength training, and flexibility before attending meetings and trainings for the show.  The performers expend so much energy and do not follow a diet.  They eat what is best for them at their own discretion, but if they want to work on a specialized thing, they have three chefs and a catering team on hand.
  • The production has a lot of moving parts and the size and how the trucks are packed for the tours are different, especially if they fly across the ocean.  Everything is meticulously labeled and the teams need to be ready to adapt to any last minute changes.
  • The production has over 1000 costumes.  These costumes are built for the function of each performer and there are four full time technicians on tour to take care of the costumes.  All the costumes require some training in order to wear them comfortably.  The clowns have larger costumes while the crickets’ costumes are light and contain a lot of stretch for performing flips and jumps.  The aerial acts also have lighter costumes as they fly from one platform to the next.   
  • The production has six washers and three dryers that travel with them all over the world.  Delicate costumes and wardrobes are dried with the fans and 60 loads of laundry are completed prior to each performance.

Gary portrays Master Flipo, the chief of the insect colony.  Alongside Canadian poles artist acrobat David, they deliver some insight into their history in the circus, their favorite insects, and anticipating OVO’s opening night in Boston.  In real life, Gary is from Austria and lives in Spain.

Gary:  When I was 12, I decided I wanted to be a clown.  I told my mom and never lost this dream.  I ended up in a mime and circus school and then started to work in the circus before I joined Cirque de Soleil.  They said, ‘We like your stupid face’ in 1992.  I moved and did a show in Las Vegas and then back to Europe and then I’ve been here almost 7 years. 

David:  I started in the circus quite late at the age of 20.  Usually acrobats start at a much younger age with gymnastics but at 20, I started from nothing.  I saw a circus show and said that I want to do that and found out there were circus schools.  I didn’t know they existed in Quebec City so I trained really hard for two years to get in because I found out that there are people all over the world who are trying to enter these professional schools.  You need to already be good at something to get in and then somehow I got in.  I did my three years of circus school for like 40 hours a week of training.  Ever since, I’ve been in the circus and working with different circuses.  I’ve been with OVO since the re-launch in 2022 with new artists and music.  I’m part of the new acts. 

We are very excited about the show and don’t know how the public is going to react yet, but we’re all feeling super rested because we just came back from three weeks of tour break from home.  We’re very happy to be in Boston with the beautiful summer weather.  We’ve met Bostonians on the street and they seem very nice.

Gary:  Especially for us clowns it is very interesting in Boston to find out where they laugh and where they don’t laugh.  We have to adjust the timing and are already having butterflies. 

David:  We toured with the show everywhere in the world.  Depending on the different cultures, finding out how the audience will react is always our biggest concern.

Gary:  What I anticipate sharing with the audience the most is always taking people onstage.  Sometimes I have to improvise which I love and it challenges me.  Generally, the whole show is a big festival of happiness.  I don’t have favorites.

David:  I am excited about my act just because in the living arts and in the circus there is always a bit of modification.  It is never one stable show.  It is thousands of versions of the show, even though it’s the same show for the public.  For us, it has little changes and our act has new music, so we work on it frequently and make little changes in the choreography.  It’s going to be fresh, new and exciting. 

Gary:  I love the jeweled beetle so I love my colors.

David:  It’s a very beautiful insect.

Gary:  But at the same time, I love the ladybug.

David:  I really like the laced fly.  The lace fly is the hair extension act and I think her costume is just brilliant and so colorful.  It’s a beautiful act.

Gary:  I like the crickets for the costumes.  How they have an engineered costume where I always think, ‘How is it possible to move in that?’

David:  Shout out to the Red Queen.

Gary:  …and the clowns and the musicians. 

David:  OVO is really about inclusion.  It’s about accepting our differences and celebrating the whole of the colony, even the cockroaches.  They are all our friends.  It’s sort of hard to choose one specific insect because they are all amazing.

David:  The show takes years to train, but for this particular show, usually the creation of a Cirque de Soleil show is a few months.  Like six months maybe and because the acrobats have been thinking about the show for a year or two, the physical preparation to get to this level takes years and years of training.  Then we adapt the skills we have to the specific number and choreography that we need for the show, but it’s not like I train physically for years to be an insect.  I train physically to be a circus acrobat and artist and then transfer the skills in a few months. 

Gary:  It’s the same thing with us…the clowns.  We are being cast for that because our profile fits in it.  The clown has his own profile for performing and stupidity.  So I was cast because I am stupid and smart. 

David:  (laughs) Maybe that is also why I was cast.

Gary:  (laughs) Bingo!

REVIEW: Boston Ballet’s immersive and uplifting ‘BB@yourhome: Look Back Focus Forward’ offers rare performances and more

The Boston Ballet launched their first virtual production of the year with an optimistic look at 2021 featuring a selection of rarely performed past performances, an exclusive look back at the Boston Ballet on tour, and where they go from here with a sneak peek into a new project scheduled for April 2021.

Opening the program is Derek Dunn, who has a history of wonderful performances including The Nutcracker, Helen Pickett’s Petal and Genius at Play.   After an insightful introduction from Boston Ballet’s Artistic Director Mikko Nissenen and Executive Director Max Hodges, He took on a monumental solo dance demonstrating humor, tension, and a wide range of emotions as Auguste in Leonid Yakobson’s rarely performed Vestris.  In a powered wig and meticulously-detailed Founders garment by Robert Perdziola, Dunn is madcap and witty to a rousing applause, taking on a dance that Mikhail Baryshnikov immortalized.  A particular highlight was a moment of subtle humor as Dunn leans forward and hesitates like a novice dancer, just learning his steps. 

Leonid Yakobson’s Pas de Quatre takes on a lighthearted and fanciful tone as Ji Young Chae, Ekaterine Chubinidze, Maria Baranova, and Nina Matiashvili unite as one in a circular dance adorned in flower crowns and flowing, pristine and romantic tutus.  This is another rarely performed piece that demonstrates a sisterhood between this quartet.  To a poignant score featuring selections from Norma and picturesque staging by Vera Solovyeva and Nikolay Levitsky, the dancers each showcase their own unique talents and much of it is lively, elegant, and charming.

Love takes many shapes in Leonid Yakobson’s Rodin in three parts.  It explores each stage of love from first glimpse to passion and it is captivating to see each part come to life.  Sun Woo Lee and Abigail Merlis have playful chemistry as they lean into each other and Abigail smiles as he attempts a kiss.  To Debussy’s classic score, Clair de Lune, Maria Alvarez and Alec Roberts depict the sweet joy and rapture of love as they move in unison in shyness and jubilance. Another highlight was Emily Entingh as she leans back into Michael Ryan and he lifts her up in admiration.

Look Back Focus Forward also reveals exclusive touring footage and Boston Ballet Artistic Director Mikko Nissenen and principal dancer Lia Cirio share in depth the Boston Ballet’s most exciting and extraordinary experiences on tour and the significance in touring once again.  One of their favorite experiences was premiering Jiri Kylian’s controversial Bella Figura at Lincoln Center in New York City for the Boston Ballet’s 50th anniversary.  Bella Figura is best witnessed to fully take in its daring, haunting, and mysterious subtlety.

The Boston Ballet also offers a sneak peek into an entirely new and innovative virtual production helmed by renowned international choreographer Ken Ossola that will soon premiere in April 15-25 2021.

Itamar Kubovy of modern dance troupe, ‘Pilobolus,’ discusses fascinating footwork and Celebrity Series of Boston return

Pilobolus has taken the stage in over sixty countries and thrilled audiences with television appearances at the Academy Awards, the Oprah Winfrey Show and the Olympics as well as made film appearances in Little Miss Sunshine, The Devil Wears Prada and Snakes on a Plane.  Executive Producer of Pilobolus, Itamar Kubovy, discussed Pilobolus’s fascinating footwork, its unique name, and the troupe’s love for Boston.

Sleepless Critic:  This is your 12th performance with Celebrity Series of Boston.  You must know Boston pretty well.

Itamar Kubovy:  We love performing in Boston and that’s not just lip service. We’ve always found our audience to teach us a huge amount about our work. The laughs, gasps, and paper rattling teach us about the work we are making.  In Boston, we encounter a crowd that makes us better at what we do and allows us to sharpen our performances.

 SC:  Pilobolus is named after speedy barnyard fungus.  In the dance, I can see the symbolism behind the name.  Is there an interesting story behind it?

IK:  Jonathan Wolken, the co-founder who named the company, had a scientist dad studying the Pilobolus fungus in his biology lab, an organism about ¼ of an inch tall that grows in cow dung and has a large eye at its tip that always leans toward light. When the time is right to reproduce, the fungus shoots its head off of its body at the fastest acceleration known in nature. This alacrity and attraction to the light inspired Jonathan to name their first dance and the fledgling company after the phototropic fungus.

SC:  It seems like a quite a physically demanding job for these dancers.  What kind of routine keeps the dancers in shape and how do they best prepare for a performance?

IK:  When our dancers are in the studio, they work 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. They are lifting each other and working with tremendous physical intensity for close to 40 hours a week. The additional prep involves body maintenance, stretching, group work, and yoga.  Regarding the prep right before the show, we warm-up with an open curtain so the audience coming in watches the dancers move on the stage.  Both the audience and dancers need some time to prepare and we try to share that time. It makes the show all the more exciting when the lights go down.

SC:  I imagine live performances and sometimes dangerous stunts can hold some surprises every once in a while.

IK:  They do, but the work these people do together day in and day out really limits the risk based on the trust they build between one another. Most importantly, these dancers know how to instantly adjust when something goes wrong. While we certainly have our moments of injury, we have a great deal of confidence going into every show.

SC:  Improvising is invaluable.  How is trust developed between other members of the group?

IK:  Trust is mysterious, but there is no doubt in my mind that the physical giving of one’s weight and balance to another person, literally putting yourself entirely in their hands over and over again speeds that process up.  Some of the principals in which our process is based is the human physical connection by sharing, giving, and taking weight.  Trust is a powerful by-product of caring touch.
