REVIEW: Seizing the day in harmony in North Shore Music Theatre’s ‘Rent’

Why do things happen the way they do?

Chance meetings and a string of random events bring a group of Bohemian artists together in profound ways as they struggle to survive in NYC.  Spanning one year from 1989-1990, North Shore Music Theatre’s Rent reveals a striking and darker interpretation than previous versions I have witnessed.  Perhaps it’s a reflection of our troubled times, but its powerful and optimistic message still remains that the best way to cope with suffering is by holding onto each other.

Directed poignantly yet hopefully with sharp choreography by Marcos Santana and vigorous music direction by Robert L. Rucinski, North Shore Music Theatre continued Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer prize-winning musical Rent live and in person at North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts through Sunday, September 28.  This rock musical has adult themes and ran two hours and 35 minutes with one 15 minute intermission.  Click here for more information and here what is next in North Shore Music Theatre’s season.

Having had phenomenal success as an acclaimed hit musical in the 90s and as one of the longest running shows on Broadway, Rent took the stage around the world and was adapted into a film of the same name in 2005.  It recently celebrated its 30th anniversary since its stage debut and it has been nearly 30 years since its Broadway debut.  In 2021, Lin-Manuel Miranda also directed the acclaimed film adaptation of autobiographical musical, Tick Tick Boom, based on Rent creator Jonathan Larson’s life starring Andrew Garfield.

Based on Puccini’s world famous opera, La bohème , Rent is a daring, joyous, raw, and poignant musical about a group of 20-somethings living in New York City during the AIDS epidemic.  It explores love, loss, hardships, dreams and realizations all while this group struggles to make the rent.

A chalkboard graffiti-riddled floor, tattered rafters, scaffolding, glowing Christmas bulbs, street lights and a sporadically-lit and weathered neon sign illuminated by José Santiago’s vibrant lighting is just a portion of Jeffrey D. Kmiec’s industrial-inspired sliding set design depicting Mark and Roger’s East Village loft in Manhattan.  Rent truly comes to life through video designer Beth Truax’s cinematic touch and Alex Berg’s bustling sound design.

Like nostalgia of the era displayed in North Shore Music Theatre’s previous production of Grease, Rent showcases its own remnants of 80s and 90s nostalgic flair in combat boots, flannels, pay phones, corded phones, amusing answering machine messages and newspapers.

After a quieter opening scene, Rent hits the ground running with fervor, urgency, and pulsing chorography in its title track. This theatre-in-the-round’s immersive experience featured various incidents of kindness and conflict occurring in several parts of the theatre and this trend continued several more times ranging from humor to frustration in building intensity.

Driven by powerful and edgy vocals, Rent’s characters are a combination of dreamers and those firmly planted in the present doing whatever it takes to get through everyday life.  Aaron Alcarez depicts ambitious and determined Mark, an aspiring documentary filmmaker living with his contemplative and temperamental roommate Roger, portrayed movingly by Austin Turner.  Roger is HIV-positive, a recovering drug addict and with guitar in hand, vows to write one amazing song before he passes demonstrated in rising triumph in One Song Glory.  However, when Didi Romero as vivacious Mimi shows up at their apartment, life takes an unexpected turn demonstrated in a playful duet and instant chemistry with Turner in Will You Light My Candle and the sincere and tender, I Should Tell You.

In fishnet tights and layered clothing, Romero is daring, charming and bold as free spirit Mimi fueled by Romero’s provocative and soaring vocals Out Tonight, possessing more than a passing resemblance to Idina Menzel who portrayed Mimi in the 2005 film.  Robert Garcia approaches complex Angel with a self-assured kindness and less splashy demeanor in Are You Okay while Aaron Arnel Harrington warmly portrays Collins with a distinctive deep baritone.

A jumble of ostentatious ego, stubbornness and high maintenance, Cate Hayman puts gusto in Maureen, especially in a gutsy and unhinged rendition of Over the Moon.  Level headed and hardnosed lawyer Joanne, portrayed with powerful vocals and a guttural growl by Kat Rodriguez, rocks in Take me or Leave Me, but one of the best moments of the musical occurs between Alcaraz and Rodriguez in a catchy, chiming and playful harmony in Tango: Maureen.

Grave issues such as homelessness, capitalism, promiscuity and drug addiction are often laid bare in Rent and is partially demonstrated in the bold La Vie Boehme.  Romance in this musical makes an impact, but what far exceeds the romance is the incredible harmony and camaraderie this group creates together.  Christmas Bells, Happy New Year, and Another Day soar, but nothing quite compares to the musical’s iconic number, Seasons of Love in which the audience shared a moment of stunned silence in awe of the stirring power of that moment.

REVIEW:  Gloucester Stage Company’s ‘The Garbologists’ is a treasure

Leave it to two strong leads to make trash an intriguing subject, especially when it is linked to tales of the heart.

Keenly directed by Rebecca Bradshaw, Gloucester Stage Company continues the regional premiere of Lindsay Joelle’s dramedy, The Garbologists live and in person at Gloucester Stage Company in Gloucester, Massachusetts through Sunday, July 26.  This two-hander production runs 92 minutes with no intermission and contains adult humor while offering some eye opening facts and a look into the physical demands working as a sanitation worker.  Click here for more information and tickets.

Fueled by Julian Crocamo’s quirky and arresting sound design which clicks and integrates car horns, crackling glass, and Snow White’s ‘Heigh ho’ expression remixed to a thumping beat, The Garbologists delves into the lives of two seemingly different strangers placed together on ‘junior jack’ Marlowe’s first day of work. 

Wearing a New York Rangers winter hat, veteran sanitation worker Danny, depicted with a thick New York accent and seemingly tough and sarcastic demeanor by Paul Melendy, is tasked with the job of training Thomika Marie Bridwell as newbie Marlowe.  Outspoken, playful, street smart, and not above bending the rules, Danny is frank, casual and forward while serious and intellectual Marlowe is quiet and reluctant to share details into why she turned to this line of work.  As they discover more about each other, their complicated and tumultuous relationship veers from ‘teach me’ to ‘don’t speak to me’ through small victories, misunderstandings, and growing tension as their time together progresses.  They may also have something more to learn from each other than they realize.

A detour, one way and parking sign, bike lane, crosswalk, a Starbucks sign, fire hydrant and a stop light spread out on marked black pavement are included in Kristin Loeffler’s authentic thoroughfare setting while garbage bags are strewn to the side.  Official high visibility and reflective jackets and orange gloves are just portion of Jen Greeke’s costuming which includes formal and work attire which offers glimpses into each individual’s personality.  Taking place during a Manhattan winter, Anshuman Bhatia’s glaring and flashing lighting evokes a sense of solitude and loneliness in the early morning still cold air as Danny and Marlowe navigate in a steel garbage truck to their next stop.

Melendy and Bridwell share a fascinating camaraderie and sharp comedic timing which makes watching these opposites react to each other thoroughly enjoyable.  Their aside looks, Danny’s prankster nature, and Marlowe’s intolerance for idle chatter make silences deafening and their banter and actions unpredictable.  They are also two people trying to overcome their current situations in their search for happiness.  Dealing with grief and family dysfunction, The Garbologists explores two people trying to overcome their current situations in search for happiness.  The production contains its share of moving and poignant moments which broadens this pair’s depth and vulnerability as they deal with complex challenges in and out of work.

In this delicate and challenging time for New York sanitation workers, The Garbologists opens a world into a day in the life of a civil servant with talk of taxes, tips, what actually happens to garbage when you throw something away and just how dangerous and crucial in what can be an underappreciated line of work.  At one point, Melendy’s Danny reflects, “There is a lot you can learn about a person by what they throw away” which is real food for thought.

Two people facing a tough time encounter each other in a bar.  Louis Robert King’s bluesy soundtrack and Jeanine Bartel and Howard Hendrix Powell’s playful chemistry make this production shine.  Directed insightfully by Melissa Skirboll, Overdue boasts a myriad of meanings for two people searching for hope.

Sometimes music can create changeYour Silent Face focuses on a Peruvian mother, depicted by Anna Capunay, who is struggling with the decisions happening within her family.  Though the production addresses trauma, mental illness and depicts some family turmoil, Your Silent Face expresses each character’s point of view in a balanced manner.  The production is lightened by the upbeat and retro rhythms of the Bootblacks.

Brooding is a searing drama and horror story about a talented nature photographer named Tara who is struggling.  Her boyfriend Matthew, portrayed with a mix of stoicism and concern by Joseph Basquill, wants to get to the bottom of it.  With an eerie sound design by Bailee Herrera, music by Griffin Robillard, and sound mixing by Devin Greenwood, Brooding has squeamish and haunting moments boasted by the cold stare, exhaustive mood swings and explosive temper notably portrayed by Hadley Durkee as Tara with an ending difficult to see coming.

Presented at first as a True Hollywood Story, Ursula is a drama about grief and trauma as a family fights over what to do with the family house. 

Tiffany Adams depicts tough and driven screen star Ursula with finesse and LaVeda Davis makes a brief but lasting impression as Ms. Tate.  Based on Kwame Berry’s Ursula:  A Dysfunction in Two Acts, Kwame Berry’s complex portrayal as quiet, sympathetic, and mysterious Dominic make the character easy to root for as the production progresses.  With an eerie and foreboding score by Vin Scialla and Darius James, Ursula is presented with originality, intrigue and a thought provoking revelation.

With upbeat direction by Catriona Rubenis-Stevens, Unlucky in Love is a lighthearted musical foray into one small town flash mob planner’s search for love with engaging narration by Imani Barbarin as Lucy Loveless.  Rachel Handler as sensible Lisa Edmunds and Lashi as Wendy Lindell share breezy chemistry with a meaningful conclusion.

Ryan, portrayed by Michael Barringer, is smoking.  In a white fur, a bun on top of her head, and large earrings, chatty Laura, portrayed with finesse by Laura Butler Rivera, has something to say about it.

In fitting black and white cinematography, Intermission is an unpredictable and seeming tongue in cheek foray into smoking.  It is also a humorous and fascinating film featuring Rivera and Barringer who have peculiar chemistry.  Rivera is mysterious, quirky and shrewd in a conversation with unexpected results.

Hearing strange noises?

Being alone in the house can be creepy.  A creak, shadows on the walls, and was that a scream?   With intriguing cinematography by Thomas Brunot, just the glow of a cell phone to light the way and a cryptic message drives this twisty tale for a wifi signal.  The wide eyes of Britt Vicars and a spooky and original score by Pablo Signori build the tension and reeling suspicion as Vicars inches her way in this battle through the dark.

Don Castro’s Your Blue Heart

With expressive black glasses and red flip flops, Don Castro as Lito is making breakfast alone in the kitchen.  Your Blue Heart is a moving journey into memory.  Spoken in Filipino and shot in Woodside, Queens, Castro and Ron Flores as Rey have a sweet rapport featuring stirring and original music by Paul Aranus.

The battle to be still with the jarring feeling of anxiety is overwhelming.  Heart racing and breathing can be deafening.  Still delves into the life of Kate Szekely who is arduously trying to shake that terrible feeling through various methods including the meditative phrase ‘I am surrounded by abundance.’   Composer Shira Bouskila and Somer Bingham’s haunting and unique sound composition ebbs and flows throughout the film in relatable unease, dread, and calm.

I am what you Imagine is a vivid, kaleidoscopic and visceral journey that explores the true meaning of life from the very beginning.  With mesmerizing editing and visual effects by Terence Ziegler as well as surreal photography by Matthew Modine and Kevin Joseph Grossman, I am What You Imagine is a powerful film that should be experienced rather than explained and boasts a surprise ending.

REVIEW: Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston makes an exciting return to the stage with a moving and remarkable ‘West Side Story’

‘I’ve just met a girl named Maria/And suddenly that name/will never be the same/to me.”

Having seen the classic musical West Side Story from the stage to the 1961 film adaptation to Spielberg’s recent Oscar worthy film, Reagle Music Theatre’s Blake Du Bois as Tony’s moving rendition of the classic song, Maria is a must see.  Many Tonys have floated through this number with surprise, naiveté, and the excitement of attraction while blinded by love, but Du Bois’s delivery evokes a more meaningful perspective.  Enhanced by his extensive vocal range, this soulful rendition depicts not naiveté, not necessarily blindness, but an overwhelming feeling of love for Maria and the fear of what that means.  So overcome by love that he must move forward in spite of it. It was like understanding Maria anew.

Sharply directed and choreographed by Rachel Bertone with seamless musical direction by Dan Rodriguez, Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston delivered powerful and clever performances as it kicked off its summer musical season with West Side Story continuing through July 16 at Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston live and in person in Waltham, MA.  This show is not intended for children under 13.  Click here for more information and for tickets.

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is the timeless tale of the Sharks and the Jets, two rival gangs who cannot seem to coexist in Manhattan without a fight.  However, when Blake Du Bois as streetwise Tony and Eevie Perez as idyllic Maria lock eyes, everything quickly becomes complicated.

Helmed by a captivating cast, Reagle Music Theatre’s West Side Story is intriguing from the start as it lays out mischief, antics and petty outrage over owning the streets.  A broad city landscape, chain linked fences, a retro jukebox and detailed drug store are just part of Janie Howland’s retro, rolling set that successfully rewinds the clock back to the 1950s.

A great deal of West Side Story hinges on its sharp dance and fight choreography and director and choreographer Bertone hits the ground running.  Along with Fight and Intimacy Director Angie Jepson, the high-kicking choreography blurs the lines between dance and fighting as the gangs intertwine in innovative and precise movements.  A leap becomes a punch and aggressiveness turns graceful…all in the same move.  Jack Mullen delivers an intense performance as the tough talking, swaggering Jet leader Riff, especially during a catchy and memorable rendition of Cool as each tense moment pops to Franklin Meissner, Jr’s intricate lighting.  Mullen as Riff and Du Bois as Tony share some affable camaraderie as they do with their fellow Jets and their fair share of united animosity toward the Sharks.  Nate Walsh stood out as hot head Action, on edge and ready for a fight while Gracin Wilkins delivers a stirring performance as outcast Anybodys.

Eevie Perez is charming and spot on as Maria, her chiming vocals and naiveté especially evident with Ana Viveros as Consuela, Marissa Pineda as Rosalia, and Karina Gonzalez as Tesesita in the exuberant and playful number, I Feel Pretty and in a gorgeous duet with Du Bois as Tony for One Hand, One Heart.  Tall and distinctive, charismatic Bianca Rivera-Irions as Anita knows how to make an entrance in a show stopping red dress, just one of the many rich, vintage, and vibrant costumes provided by Tiffany Howard.  A lively dancer, Rivera-Irions as Anita stands out in any room as only Anita can.  Rivera-Irions as Anita and Diego Klock-Perez as proud and protective Shark leader Bernardo share lighthearted and steamy chemistry.  The dynamic cast performs an exhilarating rendition of Tonight, their robust sound and stirring harmonies build the anticipation and excitement of a night that will change everything.

REVIEW: Concord Players make ‘It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play’ savvy, vintage entertainment

Before we tackle this vintage holiday favorite, I would be remiss not to mention the acclaimed founder of the Concord Players.  Fans of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women know of the beloved drama club that was established in the book as well as the Pickwick Papers, the title a nod to Charles Dickens.  Beloved author Louisa May Alcott founded the Concord Players and Little Women has been staged annually as Concord Players reached their centennial year.  Perhaps the drama club in the book was part of her inspiration.

Classic holiday entertainment resurfaces the way mistletoe suddenly hovers over unsuspecting lovebirds at just the right moment.  One of the holiday season’s most anticipated classics is Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life, a 1946 film about life’s joys and struggles culminating on Christmas Eve starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.  It returns to the television screen every year with several opportunities to watch.

Directed commendably by John Pease, The Concord Players presented this beloved classic in November with a novel and nostalgic twist.  Rewinding the clock to Radio’s Golden Age in the 1940s on a dark, snowy night in Manhattan, NY, Concord Players streamed Joe Landry’s It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play staged as a live radio broadcast on fictional station WCPR for a limited time on Broadway on Demand from Friday, November 20 through Sunday, November 22. 

The bright and festive studio stage was adorned in Christmas lights, garland, and a Christmas tree while a group of voiceover artists included Freddie Filmore as Announcer, Lana Sherwood, Sally Applewhite, Eileen Rivera, and Jake Laurette as George Bailey recreate the show on vintage sterling microphones, portraying a number of roles in the process.  Rachael Rabinovitz’s authentic and colorful costumes set a cheerful tone as performers dress in their festive Sunday best for the radio.

Optimistic George Bailey’s faith in life and humanity is challenged as he desperately struggles to figure out life’s meaning as a certain angel is vying for his very own set of wings.  Touching, poignant, and darker than one would expect, It’s a Wonderful Life is a timeless family production that reminds audiences what truly matters.  Foley artist and sound effect expert Elizabeth Havenor’s technical wizardry is a scene stealer as Concord Players bring new perspective to this classic tale.

The cast masters the tricky task of portraying 1940’s voiceover artists, while also embracing a number of beloved characters in the production.  Navigating between each individual character while voicing multiple characters young and old within the play take particular skill.  Craig Howard brings warmth and charm to wise, yet bumbling Clarence and it was fascinating to watch Howard change his voice to Sam Wainwright by placing a glass against his mouth.

It was refreshing to see Jay Newlon portraying dreamy George Bailey not with Jimmy Stewart directly in mind in a good natured, earnest, adventurous portrayal, though he needed a bit more fire during the show’s more climactic moments.  A particular highlight was witnessing the torment in George’s face as he struggled with leaving his hometown behind while also feeling obligated to stay.  His scenes with heartwarming and hopeful Rachael Rabinovitz as Mary Hatch and with Jenn Bubriski as Rose Bailey have beautiful candor.

John Alzapiedi delivered a versatile performance as a winning narrator, skillfully depicts Potter’s booming narcissism and menacing gravitas, and brings sympathetic Mr. Gower to life.

Sound designer Tim Powers was behind the show’s authentic vintage sound which included the organ-tinged, melodramatic music and jingles of old and a couple of engaging commercials “from our sponsor.”

Foley artist and sound effect coordinator Elizabeth Havenor seamlessly kept the show rolling as her busy hands maneuvered every sound seamlessly.  Allen and Anne Bantly must have brought new meaning to providing the appropriate props to keep Havenor up to speed.  She rang every bell, blew each whistle, and slammed every door while also creating an impeccably-timed ringing telephone to a wild storm to popping champagne.  It was amazing to see how all of it was done during radio’s golden age.  It’s a Wonderful Life is such a timeless show and yet translates so well into a live radio play that it never misses a beat.

REVIEW: Billy Joel brought his A-game for his fifth year at Fenway Park

Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Billy Joel will not be sharing new music any time soon.  Renowned for his library of hits in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, he stuck with the chart toppers and some lesser known singles at the Fenway Park field on Friday, August 10 as part of the Plainridge Park Casino Fenway Concert series.

‘I haven’t had a hit in 25 years,’ he muses, ‘but I have also not released an album in 25 years.’  Opening fittingly and dramatically with the theme song from The Natural, a beloved 1984 sports film starring Robert Redford, Billy Joel took the Fenway Park stage for his fifth year.  Click here to see where Billy Joel will perform next.

Showcasing his biggest hits along with a few of his lesser known ones, Billy Joel brought his A-game.  Kicking off shortly after eight in the evening as fans were still filing into the park, he arrived behind his piano for his straight-talking hit Big Shot, a song that was said to have been inspired by a dinner he had with Mick and Bianca Jagger.  Under multicolored lights and an infectious beat, from the start Billy Joel proved his ceaseless energy at 69 years old.

On a cloudy, but rainless night in Fenway, Joel referred to Boston as the birthplace of freedom where he wrote the song, My Life.  He also mentioned the Red Sox, though he’s an avid NY Mets fan, before a stirring rendition of NY State of Mind, which featured shots of New York City’s famous landmarks.  He even playfully sang Boston’s More than a Feeling before jokingly “forgetting the words.”

Sharply dressed in a dark suit and tie, Billy Joel spoke with humor and frankness, sharing personal details behind his music, his voice matured into a deeper, grittier growl with all the same power behind it.  He treated the enthusiastic full house to a spectrum of his famous and lesser known songs as he reflected, ‘I worked just as hard on the lesser known songs as the hits.’  Some of those lesser known songs included Summer, Highland Falls, Zanzibar, The Downeaster Alexa, and Vienna, a sweet, quiet tune from his album The Stranger and was also featured on the 13 Going on 30 film with Jennifer Garner.

Accompanied by a robust rock, jazz, and horn-infused big band, Joel performed upbeat number, Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song), a hit song that inspired a 2002 Tony award-winning Broadway musical of the same name.  The musical highlighted a number of Billy Joel’s greatest hits.  Dedicating a song to his three year-old daughter, Joel performed Don’t Ask Me Why as well as many of his signature hits including a resonant Only the Good Die Young, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, a colorful, extended version of River of Dreams, and It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me.

The award-winning singer-songwriter kept the crowd on their feet with surprise guests from two vastly different genres.  Peter Wolf, lead singer of the J.Geils Band, a group Billy Joel opened for early in his career.  Wolf performed the band’s 80s hit, Centerfold before calling Joel one of the nicest in the business.  Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, who was to perform with the band at Fenway the following night, also joined Joel.  Accompanied by powerful guitar, Elliott’s deep, throaty vocals delivered their audacious hit, Pour Some Sugar on Me.  As welcome as their appearances were, it couldn’t beat their return to the stage later to sing with Joel for You May Be Right.

Joel also had his share of quiet moments as he silenced the crowd with the emotional, heartfelt number, And So it Goes and She’s Always a Woman.  Sitting behind the baby grand piano most of the evening with a brief stint humming on the harmonica for Piano Man before taking to the guitar during an epic, four-song encore, Billy Joel still has a seasoned passion for the stage and left with hardly a voice, delivering short of a three hour performance.
